Propecia vs Rogaine

Propecia (finasteride) is the gold standard for preserving and thickening hair that is susceptible to thinning and balding. It blocks the DHT receptors on the hair follicle, which is the mechanism by which hair thins and falls out. It is a medication that is taken every day orally.

Rogaine (active ingredient, minoxidil) is a topical medication that is applied directly to the scalp. It helps to increase circulation to the hair follicles, allowing more blood and nutrients to get to the hair. This can help the hair grow thicker.

There is also an additive effect when using both in combination with each other. It can increase the results and many people see thicker hair than had they just used one or the other. These are the main two medical options to preserve thinning hair (along with PRP, discussed in its own topic). However, the only way to get hair where the follicles have died is through a hair transplant.
